I’m looking forward to performing at St Mary’s Church in Hook, which is just outside Goole. I lived in the village for the first six months of my life, and my family had lived there for a few years, and where we took evacuees from Hull in the war. We lived in a house right next to the river, where my dad had a smallholding, keeping pigs, goats, chickens and so on. We were often hit by floods from the Ouse’s high tides and eventually moved into Goole, but just a mile or so along Hook Road, and still close to the river, but where the riverbanks had been improved. Our house in Hook was bought by Mr Wakefield, the local butcher, and later I would cycle there on a Saturday morning to collect my family's weekend joint of meat.
In 1973, twenty-one years after my dad’s death, my mother remarried in St Mary’s Church.
Over the last few years I have performed more and more in Goole itself, initially at Junction, the arts centre near the railway station. I have expanded my involvement with my home town through larger scale projects like The Stopping Train (an installation for the Goole to Hull train) and Above Water - a kind of hymn to Goole and the East Riding for amateur choir and brass, created during the covid lockdown. I still go to watch Goole Town FC and have enjoyed making string arrangements for the wonderful Goole band Sandra’s Wedding…
When Blake Morrison started to work on the narrative text for The Stopping Train, I took him to the riverbank at the end of my road. He said that the moment he saw the river, he understood my work and its character so much more clearly...
We will give the first live performance of something from The Stopping Train at the Hook performance
