Gavin did the music for the dance Biped with Merce Cunningham in 1999 and it has become recognised as one of Merce's major works. Since Merce's death in 2009, and then the end of the Cunningham Dance Company in December 2011, it has been one of the works that have been taught to other, carefully selected, companies. The performance, as with all Merce's work, has live music and, as with the Cunningham company's original performances, the music for these subsequent is performed live - by those who have been most closely associated with it. Following a period with the Bavarian State Ballet (2013-14) and CNDC Angers (2018-19) the work is now performed with the Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon (since 2024).

Here, as with many performances, it is paired with another Cunningham work Beach Birds, with music by John Cage.
